Bucko Art Machine

Chris Binkowski, widely known as Bucko, is a celebrated artist, writer, composer, performer and activist who defies convention and constantly reshapes the artistic landscape in Ottawa and beyond. This immersive exhibition highlights his multifaceted career, showcasing acrylic and digital paintings, video art, soundscapes, music and costumes, alongside his collaborative works. Performing under the moniker Bucko Art Machine, he has made his mark as a songwriter and musician and has collaborated with many influential artists over the years, including Marisa Gallemit, Shania Leblanc, VJ Cinetik, Eliza Niemi and Nick Schofield, with public performances at venues and events such as Tangled Art + Disability, the Art Gallery of Guelph, Pique, SAW and the Digital Arts Resource Centre. With an insatiable drive for innovation, Bucko continually discovers new ways to engage with audiences, sharing his creative vision across a wide range of media. Bucko’s multidisciplinary works communicate profound emotions, personal narratives and universal themes of resilience, struggle and joy. Through his practice, Bucko bridges the gap between disability and boundless artistic expression, offering viewers a transformative and deeply moving experience. While he may not identify as a poet, titles of works such as every day i spin around the joys and get squeezed like toothpaste by all the troubles and shocks that come by between or the thrill and glamour all stopped with the beat disappearing stand out as poignant and beautifully crafted elegies in their own right.  Living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Bucko explores inventive ways to create art and music despite limited mobility, utilizing digital technologies and adaptive instruments to bring his vibrant ideas to life. One of the main challenges of living with a disability is facing exclusion and isolation. Bucko’s art practice has always been motivated by the need to communicate on a personal level and to access community. In addition to his artistic achievements, Bucko has demonstrated exceptional commitment to community engagement and accessibility advocacy. He served as a lead coordinator for StopGap Ottawa, an organization that builds custom ramps for local businesses and cultural institutions, improving accessibility for people with mobility challenges. Bucko also co-founded the Accessibility Team for Ottawa’s Bluesfest and CityFolk music festivals, where he continues to provide consultation, fostering inclusivity in the local cultural scene. His advocacy work extends to his past role on the Board of Directors for BEING Studio in Ottawa, a creative space for artists with disabilities. He was also a keynote speaker at BEING’s Artist Connect symposium, where he shared his insights on disability arts and community building. His work celebrates resilience, creativity and the power of collaboration, making him an important voice in both the art world and the accessibility movement.patreon.com/buckoartinstagram.com/buckoart—SAW thanks its exhibition partners, Debaser, Pique, Whimble, BEING Studio and the Ottawa Art Gallery, as well as its funders, the City of Ottawa, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Government of Canada, the Ontario Arts Council, the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Bilingual Ottawa, the Association des communautés francophones d'Ottawa and the Ottawa Community Foundation, along with its members and donors for their generous support.

Mas Aya + Aymara Alvarado Sánchez + DJ Gloryhull

Mas Aya ‘Coming And Going’ is the fifth release from Mas Aya, pseudonym of acclaimed Nicaraguan-Canadian composer, producer, and musician Brandon Miguel Valdivia. Over the past twenty years Valdivia has emerged as one of the most prolific and respected musicians in Canada. Until recently he was primarily known for his contributions to groups such as Not The Wind, Not The Flag, Picastro, The Cosmic Range, I Have Eaten The City, and alongside the GRAMMY Award-nominated Lido Pimienta. In addition to these projects Valdivia has also been heard alongside the likes of Laraaji, Bomba Estéreo, Tanya Tagaq, Sook-Yin Lee, U.S. Girls, Aidan Baker, Anthony Braxton, Michael Snow, John Oswald, and as remixer for Run The Jewels. He has toured widely as both an accompanist and soloist throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Latin America, and China.

However, in 2021 Valdivia’s breakthrough LP as Mas Aya, Máscaras (Telephone Explosion Record), ushered in a new era. With warm reception from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, the New York Times, and NPR it shed new and long-overdue light on his inventive compositional outlook.

Coming And Going is the follow-up to Máscaras and, much like its predecessor, it represents yet another colossal shift in Mas Aya’s creative journey. The fact that its title is so evocative of flux is no mistake; it’s an album that teems with subtle contradiction and restless intrigue, all the while carving pathways toward the reconciliation of these opposing sonic and thematic forces.

Aymara Alvarado Sánchez Coming from a lineage of artists that took her to the Real Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City, Aymara Alvarado Sánchez is recognized for her versatility in the fields of visual arts, performance and musical improvisation. She currently combines artistic projects with her professional commitment at LAB, where she facilitates the accessibility and democratization of the arts for all members of the community. Her current approach is to combine old and new methods, in the hope of breaking down boundaries and bridging cultural and environmental differences. Her work ranges from street performance to native ceremonies, combining these multidisciplinary techniques, developing her avant-garde style by interfering with the catharsis of human emotions.

DJ Gloryhull Born and raised in Mexico City and for a while now a Hull resident. Gloryhull has been playing for the last ten years within the Ottawa/Gatineau cultural circuit including SAW Centre, Daïmôn, Radio Hull, AXENÉO7, Gallery 101, Sentier culturel, Winterlude, Asinabka film festival, Latin American film festival, Debaser, first edition Pique, various residences in bars mostly in Hull and a bunch of parties here and there. ghull loves lush and eclectic sounds which tend to go most of the time towards tropical landscapes. Expect mostly contemporary sounds from the Latin American diaspora, along with other extravagant riddims and tones.

Zaho de Sagazan

If it was a material, it would be a metallic velvet; the texture both bouncy and rough; the movement somewhere between a silk-lifting breeze and the ripple caused by skip stones on a lake…While Zaho de Sagazan’s voice has a peculiar character to it, it soon seeps in as something familiar and powerfully intimate. That of a sister, a best friend, a shaman, a therapist? In any case, that of a unique writer, composer and performer. And her first album, La symphonie des éclairs, only confirms the buzz that has spread since 2022’s wave of events - namely a few outstanding shows at major festivals including newcomer support from le Printemps de Bourges and Les Francofolies de la Rochelle, the Chorus des Hauts-de-Seine prize, the Transmusicales de Rennes...

Goldie Boutilier

7:00 PM19:00

Goldie Boutilier

Goldie Boutilier is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Raised on the music of Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, Goldie’s music is noted for its cinematic quality and exploration of tragic romance, glamour, and melancholia. Goldie made her first performance at age five using her family’s junkyard business as a rehearsal space and signed her first record deal with Interscope Records at the age of 21.

A revolving door of labels and aliases later, Goldie returned to her hometown roots and re-established herself as an alt-country star, with a nod to 1950s and 1960s Americana. She started back at zero with just her name and her stories, gaining more than 11 million streams on streaming platforms in just two years as an independent artist. Her new era of music has earned praise from the likes of Zane Lowe and Elton John, booked for iconic festivals such as Lollapalooza and Calgary Stampede, and she was even hand-picked for an opening slot by Orville Peck for his North American tour.

The Cowboy Gangster Politician (2022) and Emerald Year (2023) EPs contain references to her small-town upbringing on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and her sincere experiences as a young ingenue in Hollywood.

Her upcoming EP, The Actress, promises to be her best release yet. The writing process sent her on a journey of integrity, purity, vulnerability, and a healing return to herself. These are Goldie Boutilier’s true tales of the power struggles to be in control of her own career, being exploited by The Man, discovering how much she could sacrifice for her dreams, and finding the strength to keep pushing forward, despite it all.

On Home

On Home is a 50-minute interdisciplinary contemporary dance performance, exploring the journey of losing, seeking, and finding home. This new work, collaboratively choreographed by the Voices Dance Project’s eight dancers, centers freedom and control, comfort and discomfort, displacement and rootedness, belonging and alienation to ask audiences: How do we reconcile our feelings of comfort and belonging in a place that is no longer safe for us? When we lose all that we know, how do we build again? Who are we when we emerge from the journey of leaving, seeking and finding home? What identities do we shed? What remains of us? On Home is set to an original score by Ottawa-based composer Jack Hui Litster, performed live by Jack Hui Litster (percussion, electronics), Michelle Gott (harp), and Kathryn Patricia Cobbler (looping viola). It is the Voices Dance Project’s second full-length performance since its debut in October 2023.

***

The International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO) brings the world’s best cinema to Canada’s Capital for its fifth edition. This year’s Festival provides cinephiles with an eclectic mix of films that have won awards and made waves in the international film circuit over the past year. In IFFO’s Official Selection, programmers curated 22 Canadian and international feature films and select a new Canadian short film to accompany each feature screening. Other film programs in the Festival include the established CFI series Canadian Masters, getting in-depth discussions with some of Canada’s greatest and most prolific filmmakers, and IFFO series The Gaze, which brings the audience into the discussion about diverse representation on screen.

IFFO’s industry conferences address emerging and mid-level film professionals at Screen Summit and examine issues of preservation, restoration, distribution, and exhibition at SAVE AS. Event held at the Ottawa Art Gallery and in Arts Court Theatre.

The Music of What Happens: Stories of the Great Irish Hero, Finn Mac Cool

Jennifer Cayley, Ellis Lynn Duschenes, Kim Kilpatrick, Marie Victoria Robertson and Anne Schmitz, and musician Kluane Takhini with The Music of What Happens: Stories of the Great Irish Hero, Finn Mac Cool

Sunday, March 9, 2025 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm ET | Blackbox Studio, Arts Court (2 Daly Ave) and On Demand. Tickets $33.

Warrior, lover, hunter, poet, Finn Mac Cool stands tall in the storied history of Ireland. Beloved captain of the Fianna, he leads that glorious band as they ride out to protect the green isle from all manner of threats.  When Finn and his companions gather around a fireside in the deep woods or meet in the feasting hall of a king after a long hunt, magic shimmers and shifts about them. Love and jealousy, loyalty and betrayal, transformation and trickery are never very far away. Live for the time of listening in Finn’s world; run with the great hunting dogs, meet the strange and powerful people of the Shee, travel to the land of the ever young, laugh at impossible delusions and weep as it all comes to its inevitable end.

About the Storytellers:

Jennifer Cayley has been telling stories for more than three decades now, anywhere people want to listen. Venues have included the National Arts Centre, a community centre in mid-Wales, a tiny club in Melbourne Australia, a garden in Hawaii, festivals and schools all over Canada and beyond. The traditional folk and fairy tales, along with the foundational myths and epics, are Jennifer’s particular passion. She loves the image-filled silence a powerful story can create in the space between the teller and listener.

Ellis Lynn Duschenes, a founding member of Ottawa Storytellers, has been telling for almost half a century. As a creative and dynamic primary teacher, she also brought her passion for stories to the classroom. The old traditional stories have always been the foundation of her work, with Homer’s Odyssey holding a particularly special place in her repertoire. Over the years, the strength, the wisdom and the beauty of the old tales have often served her as valuable guide posts along the way.

Kim Kilpatrick first became enchanted with the art of storytelling while attending the Ottawa Storytelling Festival and Beginner’s Workshop in 2001. She has worked to become a professional storyteller ever since. Kim enjoys telling stories of all genres to audiences of all ages, she is proud to be a storyteller with a disability.  Although Kim is well known for her autobiographical material (she has created four one woman shows since 2011) she also loves telling wonderful old stories.  She was part of the Ottawa Storytellers performances of the Odyssey in 2012 and the Iliad in 2014 and (given her Irish heritage) is particularly drawn to this wonderful material.

Marie Victoria Robertson is a theatre performer who is now deeply immersed in storytelling. She brings her boisterous performance style to myths and legends and enjoys nothing more than to make the audience chuckle and gasp. In fact, she was voted Audience Favourite at Pittsburgh TELL’s Folktale Fight 2022. A member of Ottawa StoryTellers since 2018, Marie hosted (un)told from 2021 to 2022 and currently hosts StoryTelling Open Mic. She has performed at the National Arts Centre, the Shenkman Arts Centre, numerous Fringe festivals across Canada, Children’s Festivals, and even the occasional pub (after all, the best stories are shared over pints!)

Anne Schmitz thought that she was a writer and that the world is a story, but could not quite feel the story live in her pages. In 2011 she joined Ottawa Storytellers and found that pages are not necessary. Anne supposes that stories are how humans learn and shape our world with both good and ill will. In her telling, sometimes she uses the ingredients of her varied life experiences or her family’s history; sometimes, she likes to make word pictures of the oldest of tales. Anne works to ignite in others her love of the spoken.

About the Musician

Kluane Takhini is an award-winning, multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer. He plays a multitude of percussion instruments, guitar, bass, harmonica, flutes, keyboard, and many more from his exotic collection. He has played and recorded in international settings across Canada, USA and Europe from local pubs to 500,000 person festivals (Berlin).

He has toured and recorded many “world music” albums (before it was called that), playing in unique artistic venues as diverse as grand churches, water reservoirs under Munich, an island where 100,000 doves were released at the climax of the performance and the first-ever “simulcast”, live satellite, intercontinental concert.
