Ottawa Art Gallery, Level 4

Grotto showcases a selection of artworks generously donated by Bill Staubi to the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) in 2024. This exhibition pays homage to Staubi’s unwavering support for queer artists and his deep-rooted commitment to Ottawa’s vibrant contemporary art scene.

Staubi’s journey as an art collector began in 1978 with a modest purchase of five artworks from a grad school residence show. This initial spark ignited a lifelong passion for the arts and he developed an expansive collection reflecting his unique tastes, experiences, and perspectives.

Over the last four decades, Staubi has consistently championed emerging artists and the queer community of Ottawa, solidifying his status as a beloved figure in the arts landscape.

The exhibition title draws inspiration from Staubi’s iconic, cluttered half-bath installation, a personal grotto assembled from gifts, relics, and symbols of relationships. Much like Staubi’s grotto, this collection brings together artworks that delve into themes of queer identity, community-building, and activism, offering a powerful exploration of human connection.

Galerie d'art d'Ottawa, niveau 4

Normee Ekoomiak (1948–2009) was an Inuk storyteller from Nunavik. Through his paintings, books and vibrant akinnamiutait (wall-hangings), he documented Inuit life, stories and traditions with joy and reverence.

Ekoomiak’s art bears witness to his knowledge and memories of the Inuit way of living that he cherished in Fort George, even when he later lived in Ottawa. His wall-hangings in particular embody the cultural significance of textile work in Inuit communities, where sewing is central to creative work and to the living culture of Inuit today.

Despite hardships, Ekoomiak always returned to art, determined to celebrate and share Inuit culture with both Inuit and non-Inuit audiences. His work stands as a powerful testament to resilience, beauty and storytelling.

Galerie d'art d'Ottawa, Niveau 3

Ottawa Art Gallery, Level 3

Revival echoes the beginnings of stonecut printing in Puvirnituq in 1961, and bears witness to the recent resurgence of this art, made possible by Lyne Bastien and Maggie Napartuk through traveling workshops offered in communities across Nunavik since 2014. Puvirnituq prints were simple, unadorned depictions of animals and scenes belonging to traditional Inuit imagery. Now, sixty years later, Inuit artists continue to demonstrate a profound desire to keep their culture alive through their prints.

Some of these works take inspiration from legends about the intimate and vital relationship between Inuit and their territory. In some of them, the assuredness of the line evokes the same raw approach found in early Puvirnituq stonecut prints. Elsewhere, it is through delicate incisions and a detailed realism that this attachment to the land is expressed. Others display a fascination with the interpenetration of modernity and tradition. Indeed, several prints represent an artifact out of its usual context. The frontal and almost abstract representation of the subject takes up the entire pictorial space, producing the gripping effect of a cultural icon.

By consistently emphasizing their attachment to the land and how significant this connection is in preserving their culture, the artists of Revival give us a glimpse into the many wonders and challenges of the Inuit world. Placing as they do this relationship at the heart of their priorities, they remain concerned about the upheavals currently affecting their universe, as well as the entire planet. In this, we are all connected.

Galerie d'art d'Ottawa, niveau 3

Guided by their inner voice, they’ll share the wisdom and the transformative impact of listening deeply, and the lessons learned along the way.

This episode celebrates introspection and community bonds. It’s about connecting with your inner self and trusting the journey, even when the path is unclear, and opening your mind and heart to the perspectives and guidance from your community.

Show Descriptions

The Coven (A Staged Reading):

The Coven is an intergenerational magical realist play set between 1800s Guyana and modern-day Canada. The play follows Renette, the first free woman in her family, as she seeks vengeance against her former master. But the curse she casts carries a terrible cost—one that reaches her unborn child. In the present day, teenage Thea is navigating her parents' divorce and finds herself haunted by that same curse.

As past and present blur, The Shadow—a ghostly embodiment of the curse—emerges through contemporary dance and ensemble movement terrorizing generations. Only Thea can guide her family to heal generations of pain and uncover a path to forgiveness - before the darkness consumes them all.

With moments of blocking, choreography, and music, this unconventional staged reading brings the world of The Coven to life, and provides a window into this dynamic new work.

Content Warning: non-graphic reference to sexual assault, intergenerational trauma, minor visualization and discussion of slavery, stylized violence, witchcraft, the occult, abuse, colonialism, and horror themes

No More Mr. Rice Guy:

This witty comedy tells the story of a Canadian-born high school student of Chinese descent who enters a rap music contest in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams of becoming a famous rapper. The full-length world premiere of No More Mr. Rice Guy integrates all the ingredients that worked so well for its shorter format: the humorous references to Asian culture are innocent, the dialogue is original and quirky, and Franco is as skilled and exceptional as ever in his performance, even from what is presumably his bedroom in Richmond Hill. - Review from Apt 613, Livia Belcea

Nuit:

Have you ever wanted to join in on the fun of live theatre? Now you can – with Nuit’s Heckle Night! We invite the audience to yell, give suggestions, tell their own jokes as our performers take to the stage. Get ready for a never before and never again seen version of Nuit!

Does your clubbing experience need more theatre, comedy, and choreographed dance numbers? Then Nuit is the spot for you! This award-winning story follows four queer characters as they stumble and sing their way through a night out: the cycle of partying on full, messy display. Bright lights, funky moves, deep talks and hilarious pit stops showcase themes of sapphic romance, friendship and identity. Winners of The Ottawa Fringe and the Prix Rideau Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, this cast will make you feel like you are part of the adventure. So get ready for a night you’ll never remember!

Content Warning: Coarse language, substance use (drinking)

EXA:

EXA is the fortune teller of the future– a divining machine from the end of time brought back to the modern day, inspired by the coin operated fortune-dispensing machines of the past. Enter the studio alone and have your Tarot read by the inexorable, ineluctable EXA. In just five short minutes, you can learn what the future has in store for you.

Flutterings – Monarch butterflies and climate change

Residency showcase by Valérie Chartrand opens April 24 at Artengine

Ottawa, ON – Artist Valérie Chartrand invites the public to Flutterings, an exhibition exploring the impact of climate change on monarch butterflies, presented at Artengine in Arts Court from April 24 to May 10, 2025. The opening reception will take place on April 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Inspired by scientific research conducted in Dr. Heather Kharouba’s lab at the University of Ottawa, Flutterings bridges art and ecology. Chartrand’s works incorporate UV-printed plant resin, thermochromic pigments that fade with heat, UV dyes, and solar-powered blooms, each material chosen to evoke the effects of warming on ecosystems and the delicate interdependence of life.

The exhibition also serves as a poetic memorial to monarch butterfly specimens used in research, honouring their role in advancing our understanding of climate impacts on insect life and supporting the survival of future generations.

Flutterings is the result of a residency with the Kharouba Lab and Artengine, supported by the City of Ottawa’s Creation and Production Fund. The project highlights the strength of a collaboration between art and science in addressing ecological change.

Exhibition Details:

Opening Reception: April 24, 6–8 PM

Exhibition: April 24 – May 10, 2025 (Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM)

Location: Artengine, Arts Court, 2 Daly Ave, Ottawa

On Home

On Home is a 50-minute interdisciplinary contemporary dance performance, exploring the journey of losing, seeking, and finding home. This new work, collaboratively choreographed by the Voices Dance Project’s eight dancers, centers freedom and control, comfort and discomfort, displacement and rootedness, belonging and alienation to ask audiences: How do we reconcile our feelings of comfort and belonging in a place that is no longer safe for us? When we lose all that we know, how do we build again? Who are we when we emerge from the journey of leaving, seeking and finding home? What identities do we shed? What remains of us? On Home is set to an original score by Ottawa-based composer Jack Hui Litster, performed live by Jack Hui Litster (percussion, electronics), Michelle Gott (harp), and Kathryn Patricia Cobbler (looping viola). It is the Voices Dance Project’s second full-length performance since its debut in October 2023.

***

Goldie Boutilier

Goldie Boutilier

Goldie Boutilier is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Raised on the music of Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, Goldie’s music is noted for its cinematic quality and exploration of tragic romance, glamour, and melancholia. Goldie made her first performance at age five using her family’s junkyard business as a rehearsal space and signed her first record deal with Interscope Records at the age of 21.

A revolving door of labels and aliases later, Goldie returned to her hometown roots and re-established herself as an alt-country star, with a nod to 1950s and 1960s Americana. She started back at zero with just her name and her stories, gaining more than 11 million streams on streaming platforms in just two years as an independent artist. Her new era of music has earned praise from the likes of Zane Lowe and Elton John, booked for iconic festivals such as Lollapalooza and Calgary Stampede, and she was even hand-picked for an opening slot by Orville Peck for his North American tour.

The Cowboy Gangster Politician (2022) and Emerald Year (2023) EPs contain references to her small-town upbringing on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and her sincere experiences as a young ingenue in Hollywood.

Her upcoming EP, The Actress, promises to be her best release yet. The writing process sent her on a journey of integrity, purity, vulnerability, and a healing return to herself. These are Goldie Boutilier’s true tales of the power struggles to be in control of her own career, being exploited by The Man, discovering how much she could sacrifice for her dreams, and finding the strength to keep pushing forward, despite it all.
