HYPERCOLOUR FUTURES SUMMER SCHOOL // Reimagining Institutions: Publishing as a Civic Practice

  • Possible Worlds 2 Daly Avenue Ottawa, ON, K1N 6E2 Canada (map)

In what ways can experimental publishing be a form of creative civic practice? In the last session of Hypercolour Futures, join artist Melanie Yugo (Ottawa/Toronto) for an artist talk and workshop on how printed matter - on and off the page - can act as a catalyst for collectively reimagining institutional structures and creating new community platforms.

Inspired by speculative fiction, community design and art manifestos, participants will be invited to think critically about institutions, structures and systems through a facilitated zinemaking activity. Participants will then collectively examine existing art/cultural institutions and structures through a non-Western lens and reimagine what new platforms or initiatives could look like.

The workshop will culminate in the creation of a collective arts manifesto, as a Risograph-printed publication and on screenprinted t-shirts, intended to be disseminated widely and publicly. Melanie will also speak about her artist publishing practice, founding community-driven art platforms, bridging art and public policy interventions within institutions, and centering historically marginalized voices in her work.
