Presented as part of the REAL DMZ PROJECT, an initiative begun in Cheorwon, South Korea, in 2012, Negotiating Borders is an exhibition that contemplates the various phenomena brought about by the division of South Korea and North Korea through the lens of contemporary art. In addition to commemorating the DMZ’s sense of place, its history and the meaning of the divided nation, the exhibition also seeks to ponder the future of the DMZ. The artists participating in this exhibition approach the DMZ from diverse perspectives, ranging from political and historical themes to the lives of residents of the civilian control zones developed around the DMZ over the past 70 years and other phenomena that derive from Korea's North–South division, and attempt new explorations of the natural environment of the DMZ and its ecology as it has been built up throughout the last 70 years of national division. __
Organisée dans le cadre du REAL DMZ PROJECT, une initiative artistique lancée en 2012 à Cheorwon, en Corée du Sud, l’exposition Au-delà des frontières examine à travers le prisme de l'art contemporain les différents phénomènes engendrés par la division entre la Corée du Sud et la Corée du Nord. En plus de commémorer le contexte dans lequel est née la DMZ, de même que son histoire et les réalités d’une nation divisée, l’exposition se penche sur l’avenir de la DMZ. Les artistes participant à l’exposition abordent le sujet sous divers angles, qu’il s’agisse de thèmes politiques ou historiques, de la vie des habitants dans les zones de contrôle civil qui se sont développées autour de la DMZ au cours des 70 dernières années, ou d’autres phénomènes découlant de la division entre le Nord et le Sud de la Corée. En outre, ces artistes s’intéressent de manière inédite à l’environnement naturel de la DMZ et à son écologie après 70 ans de division nationale. __
2012년 철원에서 시작된 ‘리얼디엠지프로젝트(REAL DMZ PROJECT)’의 일환으로 개최되는 《경계협상 》은 남과 북의 분단으로 인해 만들어진 여러 가지 현상을 동시대 예술의 시각으로 고민하는 전시로 2023년 10월 13일부터 2024년 1월 27일까지 오타와의 주 캐나다 한국문화원과SAW Centre에서 열린다. 이 두개의 전시장은 남과 북이 70년의 세월 동안 거울처럼 서로를 반영해 왔듯이 DMZ의 여러 다른 모습을 마주 보듯이 구성된다. 본 전시는 DMZ의 장소성과 역사, 분단의 의미를 환기하는 한편 미래의 DMZ에 대해서도 생각해 보고자 한다. 또한 참여작가들은 다양한 시선으로 DMZ에 접근하는데, 정치적, 역사적 내용부터, 70년간 DMZ 주변에 형성된 민간인 통제구역 주민들의 삶이나, 분단에서 비롯된 여러 현상도 살펴본다. 나아가 작가들은 70년의 분단에서 비롯된 DMZ의 자연환경과 생태를 새롭게 탐구하고자 시도한다. 이번 전시에서는 SAW가 커미션한 오타와 작가 아드리안 괼너의 신작을 포함하여 국내외 예술가 20명의 작품을 선보일 예정이다.
