HYPERCOLOUR FUTURES SUMMER SCHOOL // A Book as a Theatre: Queer Gestures of Resistance

  • Possible Worlds 2 Daly Avenue Ottawa, ON, K1N 6E2 Canada (map)

Can a book be a theatre, a space of activation and action? Can a puppet be a placard, a medium of dissent, an object to enact as resistance? In the third session of Hypercolour Futures, join artists Jenny Lin and Eloisa Aquino of B&D Press (Montreal) for an artist talk, workshop and discussion on puppets in protest and queer resistance, writing and sketching exercises, structure building and puppet creation.

Participants will create a collective performance piece in three parts, learning how to (1) construct a tunnel book in the form of a portable theatre; (2) sketching exercises to create puppets; and (3) writing exercises to create a short script / statement / poem that they will collaboratively enact.

Jenny and Eloisa will also speak about their artist publishing practice, from founding B&D Press in 2009, to participating in art fairs in Canada and internationally, to actively engaging with the art and zine community, to centering queer voices and experimental artists in their work.
