Premiering on Remembrance Day weekend at two beautiful and inspiring venues–November 9th, the Arts Court Theatre in downtown Ottawa and November 10th at MacKay United Church–and with generous support from the Ontario Arts Council and private patronage, this is a musical evening not to be missed!
We present, for you, a concert of powerful, dramatic, and life-affirming new music celebrating the creative energies of poets whose lives were forever marked by their service and sacrifice amidst what they felt would be the War to End All Wars.
With the music written by Ottawa-based composer Benjamin Sajo, this premiere performance features an all-star ensemble of excellent classical talent and award-winning young masters of their craft:
Felix Del Tredici (“disturbing yet fascinating” and “hair-raisingly virtuosic”, New York Times) whose trombone and recitations represent here the torch of the Unknown Soldier;
A string quintet, evoking the intense mind-scape of our journey, traversing the angstful styles of the twentieth century: Marianne Di Tomaso and Essie Liu, the violinists; Maxime Despax, the violist; Jake Klinkenborg, the cellist; Vicente Garcia, the bassist–all under the baton of Maestro Pratik Gandhi.
Selected from the celebrated recent anthology We Wasn’t Pals: Canadian Poetry and Prose of the First World War, edited by Barry Callaghan and Bruce Meyer, spanning the familiar and near forgotten verses penned on the battlefields and hospitals of Vimy Ridge and beyond Flanders.
A soirée will precede the concert in the Black Box Studio.
Tickets available online, at The Leading Note music store, and at the door.
