Plan F: HR for Arts Workers

Do you feel uncomfortable asking to be paid artist fees? If an institution has failed to pay you for your exhibition or the sale of your work in a reasonable amount of time, who would you report that to? How can you protect yourself as a freelancer/artist in organizational policy and without it? Have you noticed certain artist-run-centres/spaces creating hostile or predatory cultures towards women and/or people of colour? How would you navigate reporting sexual harassment by a fellow artist in your group exhibition? How do you navigate programming opportunities that are tokenizing your identity? How do you navigate prejudiced micro-aggressions with colleagues?

The aim of Human Resources for Arts Workers is to provide a toolkit for arts workers to handle HR related conflicts. We will utilize and discuss tools such as mediation, conflict resolution, legal council, support groups, restorative justice, and advocacy organizations. If you are interested in brainstorming, cultivating, and/or organizing for artist and arts workers’ rights, please join us.

This workshop will be lead by: Renuka Bauri, Director of Communications and Advocacy for Canadian Artists Representation / Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC National), and Sonia Giannina Vani, B.A., B.Ed, M.A., artist, communications consultant and active member of the SAW Video Board of Directors.

You are eligible to attend this workshop if you are: a SAW Video member, professional artist, creator, arts worker, cultural worker, admirer and or advocate for video and media arts.
