Panel Discussion: The Fabric of Society
Please join English Language Tutoring for the Ottawa Community for a moderated panel discussion on the barriers newcomers to Canada face when integrating into a new society, and possible solutions. A distinguished panel includes:
- Catherine McKenney, City Councillor, Somerset Ward
- Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International
- Abdulrahman al-Masri, journalist, Syrian Canadian Community Association (SCCA) board member
- Don Smith, Chair of the Refugee Working Group for the Anglican Diocese
Afterwards, in the Arts Court Studio, meet the panelists and share your views. Enjoy music and drinks, and finger foods made with love by the ladies at Syrian Food From the Heart. See if anything in the silent auction catches your interest.
English Language Tutoring for the Ottawa Community (ELTOC) is a charity whose mission is to help integrate newcomers to Canada into the community. ELTOC provide one-on-one English language tutoring for those unable to attend regular classes due to family care responsibilities, mobility issues, or other barriers. At any time, committed volunteers serve roughly 100 students throughout Ottawa, with many more on a waitlist. Over the last 5 years, ELTOC has provided English tutoring to over 500 students. Net proceeds from the event will benefit ELTOC.
